The National Motor Freight Transportation system catalogs and equitably groups all commodities moving into 18 classes (class 50 through 500) according to their “transportability”. These classes are based on four transportation characteristics prescribed by the ICC and The Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board. These characteristics are as follows: (1) density; (2) stowability; (3) ease or difficulty in handling; and (4) liability.
